Your GM dealer does all kinds of important jobs for your vehicle, from tire care to transmission service. When your transmission is in need of a checkup, you’ll notice you’re having a lot of problems with your gears. Learning to recognize the signs of transmission trouble will tell you when it’s time to head to the dealer.

6 Signs Your Vehicle Needs Transmission Service From Your GM Dealer

1. Your Check Engine Light Is On

Before you notice any problems with your car, you might see that your check engine light has switched on. This should be addressed at once even if your car seems to be behaving fine. Problems can get worse quickly, so the earlier they’re addressed, the better for your car.

2. The Gears Get Harder to Shift

If you’re struggling to shift gears, then it’s a major sign that something is wrong with your transmission system. You may still be able to switch gears now, but it might become impossible in the near future, so get the problem addressed as swiftly as you can.

3. The Gears Are Slipping

Another issue you may experience with your gears when your transmission is in disrepair is the gears slipping. Even if this happens just once, it’s an issue that can start to happen more frequently and become serious. Slipping gears doesn’t just make it harder to control acceleration, but deceleration too, and that puts absolutely everybody on the road in danger.

4. The Car Gets Noisy in Neutral

Often, new noises occurring are one of the main ways you’ll notice a problem with your car. Noises don’t immediately tell you what the problem is a lot of the time, but you can be pretty sure it’s your transmission if the strange noises start occurring while your car is in neutral.

5. The Car Has a Transmission Fluid Leak

There are lots of different fluids in your car, and any of your car’s systems could spring a leak for a variety of reasons. It would be wise to learn to identify the different fluids so you can look out for them pooling around your vehicle. Transmission fluid is bright red, so it’s pretty easy to identify when it starts leaking out and pools near your car.

6. The Gears Take Longer to Engage

When your transmission system is working as it should, shifting gears should be instant. However, it’s not always instant when there’s a problem with the transmission. When you switch from park to drive, you might not be able to drive straight away if your car is having this problem.
